How To Do Crochet Basketweave Stitch

Crochet Basketweave stitch

In this post I will show you how to do the crochet basketweave stitch.  I haven’t actually made anything using this stitch yet, but I am planning on making a baby blanket using it as I think the lack of holes in the design is ideal.

Tutorial written in UK crochet terminology.

To start you need to make a chain in multiples of 6 until you desired length, then add 1 more chain.

Foundation row:  1 treble in 4th chain from hook, 1 treble in every chain to end of row. Turn.

Foundation Row.

Row 1:  chain 2, miss first treble then *1 front post treble around the stem of  next 3 trebles, 1 back post treble around the stem of next 3 trebles*.  Repeat from *to* until then end of row, 1 treble into 2nd chain of turning chain.  Turn.

For back post treble, insert hook from back of work around the stem of treble below. Complete treble in normal way.

Row 2:  Chain 2, miss first treble, *1 back post treble around the stem of  next 3 trebles, 1 front post treble around the stem of next 3 trebles*.  Repeat from *to* to end of row, 1 treble into the 2nd chain of turning chain. Turn.

Row 4:  chain 2, miss first treble, *1 front post treble around  stem of next 3 trebles, 1 back post treble around stem of next 3 trebles*.  Repeat from *to* to end of row, 1 treble in 2nd chain of turning chain.

Row 5:  chain 2, miss first treble, *1 front post treble around stem of next 3 trebles, 1 back post treble around stem of next 3 trebles*.  Repeat from *to* to end of row, 1 treble into 2nd chain of turning chain.

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until the required size.

The crochet basketweave stitch is a great hard wearing stitch which can be used for baby blankets, bags, cushions and many other items.  It also works well in any yarn weight, so you could make thick cuddly things in chunky yarn or delicate things in lighter weight yarns.

Hope you have found this tutorial useful, I have tried to show how to do some of the stitches in the photos, I hope they make sense?  Will be back soon showing you the ‘call the midwife’ blanket I’m just finishing off.
